Manchester United have signed Andre Onana from Inter Milan while Bruno Fernandes has been chosen as the new captain by Erik Ten Hag, the club announced on Thursday.
Onana, 27, signed a five-year deal with the 20-time Premier League champions, keeping him at the club till 2028 with an option of one more year.
“To join Manchester United is an incredible honour and I have worked hard all my life to get to this moment, overcoming many obstacles along the way,” the 27-year-old said.
“Manchester United has a long history of incredible goalkeepers, and I will now give everything to create my own legacy in the coming years. I am excited by the opportunity to work again with Erik ten Hag, and I can’t wait to play my part in the success I know he is determined to deliver at this great football club.”
Onana was managed by Ten Hag at Ajax where the 27-year-old kept 104 clean sheets in 255 matches. The Cameroonian is now expected to arrive in the United States in time so that he can be available vs Arsenal in a pre-season friendly on the weekend.
It has to be mentioned that Onana is one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers in the world.
In the UEFA Champions League (UCL) final against Manchester City last month, which City won by 1-0, the Cameroonian goalkeeper completed 32 passes with 72% accuracy, completing 10/21 long balls as well, which is considered very good for a keeper.
On the other hand, Bruno Fernandes was named Man United’s captain replacing Harry Maguire who showed great disappointment as he was stripped of captaincy.
“Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United. The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis,” the club said in an official statement.
Fernandes has scored 64 goals and made 54 assists in 185 United games since joining in January 2020 and has twice won the club’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.
Even though he was not named the official captain, Bruno still wore the captain armband in 45 matches during last season.
